Make your shoes slip resistant

How to Make your Shoes Slip Resistant

New shoes always tend to have Slippery Soles. However, after constant use, your favorite pair of footwear gains traction and become slip resistance.

In cold winter weather, it can get difficult for you to walk on snow and wet surfaces, making you very cautious of your steps. Walking on this snow requires shoes with high slip-resistance features like steady soles that offer secure ground grip.

Slip-resistant shoes feature unique Rubber Outsoles designed to handle greasy, wet, or slippery floors and a tread design that directs Liquid Flow out from below your feet to help you gain more Traction.

If your pair lacks these features, you can use the techniques below to make your footwear slip-resistant.

#1. Use Anti-Skid Pads

These are self-adhesive pads that utilize abrasive and grainy surfaces to stick to the bottom of your shoe and thus prevent sliding. They offer a very effective way to make your shoe slip-resistant by improving traction on any surface. You simply have to apply them at the base of your shoe, and you can be sure to have your boots become capable of handling slippery surfaces with ease.

#2. Add an Insole

Every individual tends to have a unique footprint, arch angle, and even rate of pronation. This fact makes it hard to find a balance or stability when wearing any type of shoes. This is because most shoes are designed to have a standard universal fit, whereby it is hard for a single pair to fit a large number of people. Insoles can be added to provide a more personalized fit, reducing the chances of skidding or slipping. The right insole also helps with arch support reducing back pain.

ASTRQLE Silicone Gel Reusable Honeycomb Full Length Non Slip Insole, is a great for both sports and work boots. Its made from silicone and an air cushion damping shoe pad cushion; for better comfort and anti-skid protection.

It Absorbs sweat and provide deodorization function to ensure your feet and shoes have maximum traction, thus eliminating skidding which might cause accidents and injury.

#3. Use Glue and Sand

Another technique that can improve the grip of your shoes’ soles is using adhesive rubber glue and sand. Make a mixture of the rubber and sand then apply a thin layer to the bottom of your shoes. This adds a rough layer on your shoe sole.

This rough layer will increase friction and traction between the shoes and walking surface, giving your shoes a better grip and thus minimizing the chances of sliding and getting injuries. Sand can be easily substituted with Salt or Glue Guns (Available on Amazon) for this technique.

#4. Use Coating, Water-Proof or Hair Spray

Adhesive coating spray can be used to make your shoe slip-resistant instead of grip pads. It is a quick, inexpensive way, and works well, especially in wet weather.

It is also straightforward to use; you just need to simply spray the bottom soles of your shoes to get the right anti-slip protection you deserve.

It’s recommended to cover the shoe surface just above the sole with masking tape to prevent damaging the shoe surface.

Water-Proof spray creates slip-resistance on various surfaces, including snowy streets, slippery sidewalks, gym floors, wooden kitchen floors, or office floors. A great Example is the Rust-Oleum Never wet Boot & Shoe Spray.

The Water-Proof spray can be substituted with adhesive coating spray or hair spray when making a short fix for slippery surfaces.

The hair spray can also be used since it has a sticky ingredient that temporarily makes shoe slip-resistant. This technique will, however, be re-applied frequently or daily as it wears off quickly.

#5. Scuff Your Soles

Besides the shoes that are specialized to enhance your grip, many new shoes have a slippery bottom sole. If you realize your new shoes have no traction, simply scuff them on a rough surface just enough to prevent sliding.

You can also cuff your shoes by rubbing a piece of sandpaper or nail file against your shoe’s soles until the smoothness has been reduced. The scuffing should be minimal to prevent destroying the bottom of the shoes.

You can optionally apply Shoe Goo (Available on Amazon) for extra grip and traction; as shown in the video below.

#6. Buy a New Pair of Shoes with Proper Gripping

If work safety is paramount and you work on slipping surfaces such an oil rig, you may want to go for a permanent solution. At this point, the best solution would be purchasing a new pair of shoes specially designed to be slip-resistant.
